Genesis battery back up is BS8418:2010 compliant
January 2012
Demand for Genesis wireless PIR detector systems is surging, following the recent modification to BS 8418 to include a battery back-up solution for compliant CCTV system alarms and detectors.
BS 8418 : 2010 states that the alarms and detectors within a CCTV system must remain operational for up to four hours under power-down or power-cut conditions. This enhancement, which came with a grace period that expired at the end of 2011, may seem like common sense, but astonishingly, many CCTV systems will fail without power.
“Genesis wireless PIR detectors have a battery life of two years, not four hours, so offer a cost-effective and reliable, stand-alone solution for compliance,” explains Graham Creek, Managing Director of Luminite. “By comparison, CCTV systems using Video Analytics (VA) cameras for detection often don’t address power-cut issues adequately. The use of an uninterrupted power supply (UPS), with an appropriate amp / hour (A/h) rating, fitted to each camera or the entire CCTV system, will resolve the issue, but adds significant equipment and installation costs. Many VA users have realized that Genesis wireless PIRs can be used in conjunction with VA cameras as a more cost-effective way of achieving compliance than the UPS option. They also enhance the CCTV system with additional detection capabilities.”
Although BS8418 compliance may be dismissed by some installers as expensive and unnecessary, it is in fact critical for a timely police response. A monitoring station request from a BS8418 NACOSS compliant system will get an immediate police response, whereas the same request from a non-compliant system will be directed through the 999 process. This can add a significant delay of up to 20 minutes. Insurance companies are pushing for BS8418 : 2010 to be adopted throughout the industry.
